Apollo Information Systems Corp. has announced the public launch of iCOUNTER, a cyber risk intelligence firm dedicated to helping organizations counter highly targeted cyberattacks. Emerging from stealth with $30 million in Series A funding led by SYN Ventures, iCOUNTER is spearheaded by cyber threat intelligence pioneer John Watters.

iCOUNTER specializes in delivering precision risk intelligence focused on operations that specifically target its clients and their broader ecosystems. This launch comes after five years of development, during which the company built AI-enabled technology, advanced collection infrastructures, and refined methodologies to combat sophisticated and tailored cyber threats effectively.

In today’s rapidly evolving landscape, threat actors are increasingly harnessing AI to focus attacks on specific organizations. By using AI capabilities, they accelerate reconnaissance efforts, profiling targets swiftly and cost-effectively. Once adversaries gain a comprehensive understanding of a target’s security posture and vulnerabilities, they use AI to craft ‘zero-day TTPs’ new and unrecognized tactics, techniques, and procedures.

iCOUNTER aims to equip its customers with the ability to detect, deflect, and neutralize these uniquely tailored attacks at scale.

“We are entering a new era in cybersecurity,” said John Watters, CEO and Managing Partner of iCOUNTER. “Traditional approaches will continue to fall short as defenders face a surge in targeted operations leveraging AI to create novel TTPs. Conventional threat intelligence reports on previously seen threats, but in this era, many organizations will be Patient Zero.”

Watters is recognized as a cybersecurity visionary with over two decades of leadership experience. Previously, he served as President and COO at Mandiant, leading to FireEye’s sale and Mandiant’s subsequent acquisition by Google. Following the acquisition, he joined SYN Ventures as a Venture Partner and served on the boards of several companies, including Oleria, Batuta, Mitiga, and Apollo. With iCOUNTER, Watters returns as CEO to build a platform aimed at defeating AI-enabled adversaries and targeted threats.

“iCOUNTER has created the only intelligence capability dedicated to countering targeted attacks,” said Jay Leek, Managing Partner and Founder of SYN Ventures. “Their distinct approach is crucial in a time of AI-powered adversaries.”

Chris Kissel, Research Director at IDC’s Security and Trust Products Group, emphasized the market need for this approach:

“Providing dedicated threat intelligence tailored to an individual company’s specific vulnerabilities is a service that’s desperately needed. iCOUNTER’s unique focus will become invaluable for sensitive organizations and critical systems.”
