Top Highlights

  1. Over 520,000 security events in Italy, with 30.3% evolving into incidents and only a small fraction reaching critical levels, indicating escalating threat activity.
  2. Italy ranks sixth globally for ransomware attacks, affecting 2.27% of companies in 2025, especially targeting manufacturing sectors with legacy systems.
  3. AI increasingly dominates cybersecurity efforts, automating threat detection and analysis, reducing noise for human analysts, and highlighting the growing sophistication of attack and defense mechanisms.

Threat, Attack Techniques, and Targets

Italy ranks as the sixth country in the world for ransomware attacks. In 2025, 2.27% of Italian companies were affected. Although Italy moved down from fifth to sixth place in the global ranking, the number of attacks doubled since 2024. The main targets are large companies with over 1,000 employees and a turnover of more than EUR 50 million. Manufacturing firms are hit most often, accounting for 17.9% of attacks. This is because many manufacturing environments use outdated systems that are more vulnerable to attack. Attackers often encrypt company data and demand money to unlock it. Yarix reports that they have intercepted over 4,000 threats, including data theft attempts and phishing attacks. Artificial intelligence is increasingly used in both defending against and conducting cyber attacks. Security teams are also testing AI-driven threat management systems to improve initial threat detection.

Impact, Security Implications, and Remediation Guidance

These ransomware attacks can severely impact companies. When data is encrypted, businesses lose access to important information. This can cause stops in production, financial loss, and damage to the company’s reputation. The rise in attacks shows the need for stronger defensive measures. Organizations should focus on active defense and threat intelligence. However, specific remediation steps are not provided here. Companies and security teams should consult their cyber security vendors or authorities for detailed remediation guidance. Regular updates, strong security practices, and advanced threat detection are essential to fight ransomware.
