The encryption process involves targeting multiple data sources, including SQL databases, network shares, local drives, and virtual machines, and is accompanied by clean-up routines that erase traces of the attack. The operators demand hefty ransoms—sometimes around $1 million—usually paid in Bitcoin, and they promote their illicit operations further through a dark web portal and a dedicated cybercrime forum called “The Last Haven Board.” Reported by Cisco Talos researchers, these activities highlight both the evolving technical sophistication of Kraken and the targeted nature of its attacks, underscoring the importance of vigilant cybersecurity measures.
