Summary Points

  1. Hackers are stealing AI account credentials and cloud server access to use expensive AI resources without paying, often offering guaranteed access on dark web marketplaces.
  2. Criminals are hacking into company servers to install their own AI models, leveraging victim infrastructure for covert, cost-free AI processing.
  3. These attacks are hard to detect as increased AI activity on servers may appear legitimate, posing significant risks to organizational security and resource theft.

Section 1: Threat, Attack Techniques, and Targets

Hackers are turning to a new crime called LLM-jacking. This attack involves stealing login details for AI accounts or breaking into the servers that run AI systems. Criminals want to use expensive AI services without paying for them. They also target company servers that host AI models. These stolen credentials and access are sold on the dark web at very low prices, sometimes up to 97% off. Sellers even promise “guaranteed access” and replacements if accounts are blocked. Attackers may also break into cloud servers and install their own AI models. They do this to use the company’s computing power secretly. The main targets are companies that use AI systems from big names like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.

Section 2: Impact, Security Implications, and Remediation

This new threat can have serious effects. Hackers can steal expensive AI resources and use them for cybercrime or espionage. Companies may unknowingly pay for stolen AI usage or lose control of their servers. Protecting AI credentials alone is not enough. As AI use grows, businesses need to watch who is using their systems. They should also check for unusual activity on their servers. To stay safe, organizations must secure their AI accounts and monitor their server activity closely. If an organization suspects they are targeted by LLM-jacking, they should seek guidance from their AI provider or cybersecurity experts. It is vital to follow the advice of vendors and authorities to prevent and respond to these threats.
