Fast Facts

  1. Significant Growth: Since 2016, cybersecurity employment in the U.S. has increased by over 300,000 positions, and the annual issuance of information security degrees has tripled to nearly 35,000.

  2. RAMPS Initiative: The Regional Alliances and Multistakeholder Partnerships (RAMPS) program, administered by NIST, has fostered five regional partnerships that connect employers, educators, and community organizations to create pathways into cybersecurity careers.

  3. Focused Objectives: Each RAMPS partnership has launched initiatives like high school dual enrollment programs, internships, and skills gap assessments to bridge the gap between education and local workforce needs.

  4. Sustained Impact: Over nine years, RAMPS partnerships have expanded and adapted, leading to innovative cybersecurity education programs and collaborations, resulting in a total of 33 RAMPS communities by 2023 and further developments slated for 2024.

Building a Strong Cybersecurity Workforce

Since 2016, the landscape of cybersecurity jobs has transformed significantly. Employment in this field has surged, adding over 300,000 positions. The number of information security degrees awarded has tripled, reaching nearly 35,000 annually. This rapid growth highlights a pressing need for skilled professionals in cybersecurity. Five regional partnerships, supported by the RAMPS program administered by NIST’s NICE Program Office, play a crucial role in addressing this need. These partnerships connect employers, educators, and community organizations, creating vital pathways into cybersecurity careers.

The importance of RAMPS funding cannot be overstated. It provides credibility and attracts key stakeholders. Each partnership articulated specific goals, from facilitating dual enrollment for high school students to addressing skill gaps between businesses and graduates. This focused approach fosters collaborative discussions among stakeholders, ultimately leading to a better alignment of educational outcomes with industry needs. Internships and apprenticeships enrich learning experiences, giving students hands-on opportunities to apply what they learn. These initiatives create a pipeline of skilled workers ready to meet the demands of a dynamic job market.

Innovating for Future Opportunities

The positive impact of the RAMPS initiative extends beyond initial partnerships. Over the years, collaborations have expanded to include more institutions and government entities. The focus now includes K-12 education, enhancing career pathways and dual enrollment options. This expanded scope means that more students gain early exposure to cybersecurity concepts and careers. Additionally, partnerships are leveraging community resources to place learners in internships that contribute to public safety and civic cyberdefense.

As a result of these efforts, several universities have advanced their programs significantly. New programs in cyber operations, digital forensics, and risk management specialization have emerged. The RAMPS initiative continues to evolve, sparking further innovation in cybersecurity education and workforce development. With 33 active RAMPS communities and new awards on the horizon, the commitment to cultivating a diverse cybersecurity workforce remains strong. This dynamic progress not only reflects the changing demands of the cybersecurity field but also nurtures the talent necessary to safeguard our digital future.
