Threat, Attack Techniques, and Targets

Russian threat actors are exploiting a flaw in Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA), specifically CVE-2026-42897, a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability. They began activity on July 22, 2026, and have exploited it in attacks since May 2026. The attackers are linked to Laundry Bear, also known as TA488. They previously exploited a Zimbra vulnerability in July 2025.

In these attacks, the threat actors send fake emails from compromised or controlled accounts. The emails appear as normal messages about topics like supply chains and market updates. There are no links or attachments, which makes the messages seem legitimate. When a recipient opens the email, the exploit triggers automatically. This triggers a JavaScript payload called ZimReaper. This malware can steal up to 90 days of email data and other valuable info from the victim’s mailbox.

The attackers target U.S. and European government networks. They also go after telecoms, finance, hospitality, and aerospace companies. Their goal is to gain persistent access to email accounts and gather intelligence.

Impact, Security Implications, and Remediation Guidance

The malware used in these campaigns, called OWAReaper, is very advanced. It runs inside the Outlook Web Access browser and creates a backdoor for the attackers. OWAReaper can rewrite emails on the Exchange server and hide its exploit content. It disables popup windows and right-click options, making it harder to detect.

Once inside, it gathers user information such as email addresses and Outlook settings. It also intercepts saved credentials using hidden webpage elements. The malware creates encrypted copies of itself that run every time the victim opens OWA. It even checks for installed Outlook add-ins to steal OAuth tokens and gain full mailbox access. This allows the threat actors to stay hidden for a long time.

The malware uses two ways to communicate: GitHub and email commands. It checks GitHub commits for instructions every 24 hours. It also sends and receives commands via email. Data exfiltration happens mainly over HTTPS or through DNS tunneling.

Because of the sophisticated nature of OWAReaper, it can survive browser restarts, credential changes, and device re-imaging. The activity seems focused on intelligence gathering across sectors, especially government and defense.

Remediation guidance should be obtained from Microsoft or relevant cybersecurity authorities to address this vulnerability. The latest patches and security best practices are essential to prevent similar attacks.
