Chinese APT VerdantBamboo Exploits BRICKSTORM Malware to Breach Firewalls and Devices

For over a year, a Chinese-linked hacking group called VerdantBamboo has secretly infiltrated corporate networks across various organizations. They used a sophisticated, custom malware toolkit called BRICKSTORM to gain and maintain access, especially targeting firewalls, storage systems, and network devices. The attackers demonstrated remarkable patience and technical skill, re-entering networks even after initial removal efforts, by exploiting vulnerabilities like privilege escalation flaws. They compromised not only the primary targets but also their managed service providers, enabling them to steal credentials and internal infrastructure details, thus bypassing usual security measures. Reporting from threat intelligence firm Volexity revealed that VerdantBamboo had been inside these networks for at least 18 months, secretly controlling devices such as Egnyte appliances and firewalls. The group’s resilience was highlighted by their ability to re-establish access through stolen admin credentials and backdoors, even after their command-and-control servers went dark. The incident underscores the necessity for organizations to implement strict security protocols, monitor network traffic vigilantly, and patch known vulnerabilities, as the threat actors behind VerdantBamboo operate with high precision and adaptability, making detection and mitigation critical challenges.
