7-Zip Vulnerabilities Enable Remote Code Execution

Top Highlights

  1. Two high-severity vulnerabilities (CVE-2025-11001 and CVE-2025-11002) in 7-Zip can enable remote code execution via malicious ZIP archives exploiting symbolic link handling flaws.
  2. These flaws allow directory traversal, potentially placing malicious payloads outside intended folders and leading to system compromise.
  3. Exploitation requires user interaction to open a malicious archive, but successful attacks could result in full system control, data theft, or malware deployment.
  4. The developer released 7-Zip version 25.00 to fix these issues; users must update immediately to mitigate significant security risks.

Key Challenge

Two critical security flaws, labeled CVE-2025-11001 and CVE-2025-11002, have been identified in all versions of the widely used open-source file compression tool, 7-Zip, prior to its latest update. These vulnerabilities hinge on how 7-Zip processes symbolic links within ZIP archives. An attacker could craft a malicious ZIP file that, if opened by a user, manipulates the decompression process to perform directory traversal, potentially extracting and executing malicious code outside the designated folder. This could grant attackers remote code execution privileges, allowing them to take control of the affected system, steal data, or deploy malware like ransomware. Fortunately, exploitation commands require user interaction—meaning the victim must knowingly open the harmful archive—although the potential damage remains high given the software’s popularity and widespread use.

The flaws were reported to the developers on May 2, 2025, and, after a coordinated disclosure process, a security advisory was released on October 7, 2025. In response, the 7-Zip team released version 25.00 to fix these vulnerabilities, urging all users to update immediately. The vulnerabilities were discovered by Ryota Shiga of GMO Flatt Security Inc., working with takumi-san.ai, highlighting the ongoing importance of timely patching and user awareness in cybersecurity defense.

Critical Concerns

Two critical vulnerabilities, CVE-2025-11001 and CVE-2025-11002, have been identified in all versions of the widely used open-source file archiver, 7-Zip, posing high-severity cyber risks. These flaws exploit how 7-Zip processes symbolic links within ZIP archives, allowing remote attackers to craft malicious files that, when decompressed by vulnerable users, can enable directory traversal attacks. This manipulation potentially leads to arbitrary code execution, giving attackers the ability to install malware, steal sensitive data, or fully compromise affected systems—particularly if the user operates with elevated privileges. While the attack requires user interaction, its impact on data confidentiality, system integrity, and operational availability is substantial given the software’s prevalent usage. The discovery prompted the release of a patched version (25.00), and urgent updates are strongly recommended for all users to mitigate these threats and prevent malicious exploits that could escalate into widespread cyber incidents.

Possible Actions

Quick action in addressing the ‘7-Zip Vulnerabilities Allows Remote Attackers to Execute Arbitrary Code’ is crucial to prevent potential security breaches and protect sensitive data from malicious exploitation.

Mitigation Strategies

  • Update Software: Regularly download and install the latest 7-Zip patches and updates from the official website.
  • Disable Unnecessary Features: Turn off JavaScript and other active content within 7-Zip settings if not needed.
  • Restrict Access: Limit user permissions and restrict access to critical systems until vulnerabilities are patched.
  • Monitor Activity: Implement continuous network and system monitoring to detect suspicious behavior indicative of exploitation.
  • User Awareness: Educate users about the risks of opening unknown or untrusted compressed files.
  • Firewall Rules: Configure firewalls to block malicious outbound and inbound traffic related to exploitation attempts.
  • Backup Data: Maintain up-to-date backups to recover quickly in case of an attack.
