Fast Facts

  1. ARMORY CASTLE exploited CVE-2026-102764, a zero-day vulnerability in BeyondTrust Remote Support, to upload malicious files and gain initial access.
  2. The threat actor used proprietary utilities, custom malware (SAWFLY webshell, BARECLAW tunneler), and log deletion tactics for persistence, privilege escalation, and lateral movement.
  3. Immediate patching and review of logs are critical, as widespread exploitation is imminent following the vulnerability’s public disclosure.

Threat, Attack Techniques, and Targets

Threat actors known as ARMORY CASTLE, linked to Chinese espionage, exploited a zero-day vulnerability in BeyondTrust Remote Support appliances. This vulnerability is identified as CVE-2026-102764. They used this flaw to gain initial access and upload files without authorization. The attack took place in late August 2026. ARMORY CASTLE then used special tools to escalate their privileges. They targeted enterprise systems that rely on BeyondTrust appliances. Their goal was to access sensitive remote management and troubleshoot data. During the attack, they used proprietary command-line utilities and abused appliance configurations. They also used custom malware tools like SAWFLY webshell and BARECLAW tunneler. To stay hidden, they deleted logs and artifacts from the system.

Impact, Security Implications, and Remediation Guidance

The exploitation of CVE-2026-102764 can cause serious security problems. Attackers can gain persistent access to remote support systems. They can escalate privileges, move laterally within networks, and potentially steal sensitive data. The threat actor’s knowledge of the appliance internals makes detection harder. Organizations affected should immediately apply patches provided by BeyondTrust to fix the vulnerability. They should also review additional guidance from the vendor. If there is no specific guidance, organizations should seek advice from cybersecurity authorities or the vendor. These actions help limit the damage and prevent future attacks.
