Global Vehicle Cybersecurity Competition Overview

VicOne and Block Harbor recently revealed the winners of the Global Vehicle Cybersecurity Competition (VCC). This event attracted nearly 500 participants globally, showcasing a mix of newcomers and seasoned professionals. The competition followed a Capture the Flag (CTF) format, designed to enhance skills while promoting safer connected and software-defined vehicles (SDVs). Recognizing top performers across four categories, Willem Melching emerged as the overall champion, while Zsolt Dénes, Chanhyeok Jung, and a group of talented individuals took top spots in their respective areas. Max Cheng, CEO of VicOne, emphasized the dual challenge facing the automotive industry: safeguarding both legacy vehicles and future SDVs. He noted the growing need for cybersecurity professionals and emphasized the importance of developing skills to counter threats effectively.

Learning Through Realistic Scenarios

The Global VCC provided participants with practical learning through realistic scenarios. Participants tackled challenges that mirrored actual attack paths and defense strategies. They learned to penetrate legacy vehicle defenses, block malicious firmware overwrites, and protect cryptographic keys. Additionally, they identified anomalous CAN messages and utilized Threat Analysis and Risk Assessment (TARA) methodologies. By engaging in these simulations, participants gained hands-on experience while earning Continuing Professional Education credits and networking with peers. As the competition concluded, Willem Melching earned an exclusive opportunity to attend Pwn2Own Automotive 2026, further highlighting the event’s significance. Overall, the Global VCC stands as a powerful example of collaboration and community effort in the evolving landscape of automotive cybersecurity, ultimately contributing to a safer future for all road users.
