Hacker Extradited to the U.S. Over COVID-19 Cyberattacks

Recently, a Chinese hacker was sent to the United States from Italy to face serious charges. The man, 34 years old, is accused of working with a Chinese hacking group called Silk Typhoon. He was arrested last year in Italy and now faces multiple charges. These include stealing COVID-19 vaccine research and launching cyberattacks on U.S. organizations. His actions are believed to be linked to Chinese government efforts to gather sensitive information. The extradition highlights international cooperation in fighting cybercrime, especially when it involves national security and critical health research.

Details of the Cyberattacks and Legal Proceedings

According to authorities, the hacker and his co-conspirator hacked into systems of U.S. universities and labs between 2020 and 2021. They exploited weaknesses in Microsoft Exchange Server, a common email platform used worldwide. This allowed them to access and steal valuable data on COVID-19 vaccines and treatments. The hacker worked for a Chinese company called Shanghai Powerock Network Co. Ltd., which the U.S. links to government-backed hacking operations. He denies any connection to the Chinese government, claiming he was mistaken for someone else. His lawyer says he pleaded not guilty, and the case continues in the U.S. legal system.
