New Bugs Enable Attackers to Take Over Servers Without Login

Problem Explained

A significant vulnerability was discovered in Progress ShareFile’s Storage Zones Controller, a key component used by organizations to securely store files on-premises while maintaining cloud management. This flaw, affecting version 5.x, was unveiled after researchers identified two critical bugs: an authentication bypass and a remote code execution vulnerability. The first bug allows attackers to access restricted configuration pages without login, due to improper handling of redirect logic, which causes important admin functions to be exposed. Once inside, hackers can alter crucial settings and deploy malicious files. The second bug then enables these malicious files—such as webshells—to be uploaded and executed remotely, providing control over the server. This attack chain was showcased by WatchTower, who noted that roughly 30,000 servers facing the internet are vulnerable and attractive targets for cybercriminals. Although Progress reported no active exploitation yet, they released patches in early April, urging organizations to upgrade and scrutinize their servers immediately. This incident underscores the importance of timely patching and vigilant monitoring to prevent attackers from hijacking sensitive systems under the radar.
