Fast Facts

  1. Acquisition Alert: Zscaler has acquired the cybersecurity startup SquareX to enhance browser security and enforce network policies across managed and user-owned devices.

  2. Innovative Technology: SquareX has developed a browser extension offering advanced detection and response to threats in Chromium-based browsers, addressing vulnerabilities not covered by existing web gateways.

  3. Market Demand Growth: As web browsers become the primary interface for work (85% of activities), the adoption of secure enterprise browsers is predicted to rise from 10% to 25% by 2028, according to Gartner.

  4. Strategic Integration: Zscaler plans to integrate SquareX into its Zero Trust Exchange, aiming to address the growing threats targeting browser-native elements like authentication cookies and session tokens.

Zscaler Acquires SquareX to Enhance Browser Security

Zscaler has made a significant move in the cybersecurity field by acquiring SquareX, a startup specializing in secure browsing technology. This acquisition aims to strengthen Zscaler’s capabilities in enforcing network and application access policies for browsers used on both managed and personal devices. SquareX, founded in 2023, recently launched a browser extension that detects and responds to potential threats native to browsers, such as malicious scripts. Moreover, the deal adds an essential layer of security, addressing gaps left by current web gateways.

Additionally, SquareX’s technology integrates seamlessly with popular browsers like Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Zscaler plans to incorporate SquareX into its Zero Trust Exchange platform. By doing so, security teams will gain deeper insights into browser activity while users will experience minimal disruption. Reports indicate that web browsers now account for 85% of work-related computing. As more organizations recognize the need for enhanced browser security, forecasts suggest that the adoption of secure enterprise browsers will increase significantly by 2028.

Growing Demand for Secure Browsing Solutions

With cyber threats evolving, the demand for secure browser solutions is on the rise. Recent research highlights that attackers often target vulnerabilities within traditional browsers. Zscaler’s acquisition reflects a broader trend of companies prioritizing secure browsing technology. Competitors like CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Networks have also invested in secure web solutions, showcasing a growing market.

Dhawal Sharma from Zscaler noted the integration of SquareX is already in progress. Although SquareX’s current customer base is modest, there is an anticipated spike in demand. This acquisition signifies a pivotal moment in Zscaler’s strategy, focusing on the browser as a primary interface for user interaction. As the cybersecurity landscape evolves, firms will likely continue investing in technologies that offer robust, browser-centric security solutions.
